What’s in a name?

You’ve got your vacation destination all worked out; you’ve done your research, planned which local attractions to visit, and you’re ready to go. There is just one little detail left to decide: where are you going to stay? Are you going to book a standard hotel room, or reserve quaint lodgings in a bed-and-breakfast? What is the difference between the two, and which choice is better?
Hotels and bed-and-breakfast inns each have distinguishing features that set them apart. The main difference is that bed-and-breakfasts usually offer complimentary breakfast in addition to the obligatory lodging; though it can also be said that they are cozier and more homey in comparison. Hotels, on the other hand, are usually more structured and streamlined in their hospitality. While bed-and-breakfasts can vary in capacity, setting, environment, and building type, most hotels have a ‘structure’ to them; you know exactly what you are getting in terms of room furnishings and amenities.
In addition, hotels have very different pricing ranges than bed-and-breakfasts. Nice hotels may charge anywhere from $90 - $150 per night; if you are looking for a bargain, you can probably find a basic hotel room for $50 a night or lower. Bed-and-breakfasts, on the other hand, rarely rent out rooms for under $100. Some high-end bed-and-breakfasts may even charge the same fare as a luxury hotel; costs rising into the hundreds. However, it is difficult to determine which is the better deal, since the average bed-and-breakfast exhibits a higher degree of comfort and luxury than hotel rooms of the same price. Also, the price difference may be mitigated by special discounts or deals, under which some luxury bed-and-breakfast lodgings have even been priced at the same level as a discount hotel room.
As far as ambience and atmosphere go, hotels and bed-and-breakfasts are evenly matched. Bed-and-breakfasts can exist in a plethora of different forms, from woodland cabin getaways, to elegant Victorian mansions, to sprawling farmlands, to scintillating dream-gardens. Hotels also employ their fair share of variety, though in a more artistic and daring sense. Aside from the usual array of modern, soothing environments in most upscale hotels, some rarer examples include underwater hotels, cave hotels, capsule hotels, bunker hotels, and even treehouse hotels. However, the only difference between the two is that travelers must usually opt for the high-end luxury hotels in order to experience a significant change in atmosphere. Bed-and-breakfasts, on the other hand, are so naturally diverse that each one – no matter the cost – is a unique experience in itself.
Amenities are also an important aspect of any travel experience. While hotels may provide the essentials – usually in the form of free wi-fi, a coffee maker or microwave, and those cute little complimentary toiletries – bed-and-breakfasts definitely have the advantage here. Just the array of possible amenities to be found in an average bed-and-breakfast is impressive; they have been known to incorporate such things as sitting gardens, biking trails, cooking classes, wine tasting, whirlpool tubs, fitness centers, and tennis courts. Even the little details are attended to. Whether it be the decorative touches in the rooms’ decor, the quaint, elegant little quirks to be found, or the peace-of-mind that comes with knowing breakfast will already be downstairs when you wake up, the overall quantity of amenities provided at a bed-and-breakfast usually surpasses that of similar-quality hotels. This is probably due to the fact that many bed-and-breakfasts are privately operated, and so the owners are able to personally do everything they can to ensure the comfort of their guests.
However, we mustn’t forget one of the most obvious factors for comparison: availability. Amenities and an elegant atmosphere do little if one cannot find lodgings to begin with. Hotels appear to outdo bed-and-breakfasts in this aspect; it is estimated that while there are around 9,870 bed-and-breakfasts in the continental United States, there are roughly 7 times as many hotels. This makes a hotel the most convenient choice if you are looking for lodgings near a highway, or suddenly find yourself in need of a place to stay.
Ultimately, the comparison between a hotel and a bed-and-breakfast depends on what you are looking for in your accommodations. If you are looking for convenience and a bargain, and seeking nothing more than a place to stay - or, conversely, if you are willing to spend big bucks for a modern, debonair travel experience - a hotel is probably the best choice for you. However, if you want elegant luxury or quaint charm at a relatively modest price, and if you are planning to spend a good portion of your vacation time at your accommodations, then a bed-and-breakfast sounds like the perfect fit.
