Spa Therapy Bathing in therapeutic mineral waters is a soothing and adventurous form of alternative medicine, known to aid the human body in recovering from numerous maladies. Each mineral-bathing experience varies by way of temperature, pH, and composition, and these factors may be selected so as to correspond with particular conditions or illnesses. For instance, hot springs that give off bicarbonate and carbon dioxide vapors may be better suited toward individuals with hypertension or heart disease, as the effervescent vapors are thought to increase blood circulation. Mineral baths that are rich in salts or mud-infused sulfur compounds are useful for treating skin inflammations, post-surgery incision sites, and even arthritis and chronic joint pain. Mineral baths may even cure fungal infections, given that the waters contain adequate concentrations of arsenic. Even without taking the mineral-related health benefits into consideration, hot springs still induce wellness and rejuvenation by themselves. Just the act of relaxing in a mineral bath does wonders for the endocrine system, by reducing the body’s production of ‘stress hormones’ and therefore decreasing the adrenal glands’ workload. Please take note: it is highly advisable that you have a discussion with your doctor before deciding to take mineral baths for medicinal purposes. For the full effect to take place, one must usually undergo mineral bath therapy over the course of several weeks, and, in some cases, certain conditions (i.e. temperature) within the mineral baths may actually be counterproductive to the healing of some diseases.
