Hot SpringTaking a mineral bath or a nice, long soak in a hot spring – even if only for relaxation purposes – is an excellent form of therapy. The heat, which induces cleansing of the pores and systems through sweating, affords the skin a unique, deep-cleaning purge of toxins and dirt. In addition, the combined sensation of weightlessness and heat soothes the entire body-mind system, allowing an individual to simply ‘lose themselves’ and unwind for a time. In some cases, springs in a relatively natural environment are considered to transfer the ‘qi’, or natural life force, of the environment around them to the individual soaking in the hot spring. This is said to be a result of the hot spring combining aspects of all five elements: earth (the ground), metal (the spring’s diluted mineral content), water, wood (surrounding foliage), and fire (the heat of the spring). As a result, hot springs have long held a reputation for bringing harmony to the body-mind system.
