Origin of The Sauna
Spiritual Significance

ArtworkAfter playing a part in many civilizations’ culture and lifestyle for centuries, the sauna began to be respected as a spiritually significant object. Strict standards for behavior, propriety, and ritual soon came to be associated with taking a sauna. An astonished Swedish economist even remarked that, in 1776, some persistent individuals even considered the sauna building to be “some kind of shrine.” Even in modern-day saunas, an air of reverence is still prevalent. The old saying, “Jokaisen on kayttaydyttava saunaaa samalla tavalla kuin kirkossa,” which translates to, “In the sauna, one must conduct himself as one would in church,” is still heard in Finland today. Still, such an approach to the act of enjoying a sauna has its’ advantages: the chaste and respectful attitude advocated in historical times has protected the Finnish sauna – and, as a result, its’ modern counterparts – from suffering the same corruption that tarnished many other bathing institutions in Europe during the Middle Ages.
