How does shiatsu work?

Spa TherapyWhen administering Shiatsu massage, therapists use specialized finger and palm pressure to manipulate pathways and meridians in the body that are said to control the natural flow of energy, or qi (pronounced ‘chee’). In scientific terms, what Shiatsu massage does is calm the nervous system through pressure points, ultimately improving the receiver’s circulation, healing stuff muscles, and alleviating stress in the process.

During a Shiatsu massage, the therapist will apply a gentle, rhythmic pressure with their fingers, thumbs, and palms. Because this treatment utilizes the finger pads instead of the whole palm, it is generally more precise than most other massage treatments. During the course of the massage, if pressure points cause you any pain or discomfort, feel free to inform the therapist and they will adjust the amount of pressure to a more comfortable level.
