Most would find it interesting that the common practice of ‘Swedish massage’ does not originate from Sweden – or even a person of Swedish heritage. Peter Henry Ling (1996-1837), the man credited as the “father of Swedish massage”, did not actually use Swedish massage techniques in his “Swedish Gymnastics Movements” nor in the gymnastics institute he founded in 1813. The series of systemized massage methods currently referred to as the “Swedish Massage System” was actually invented by Dutch practitioner Johan Georg Mezger, who is the inventor of the inexplicably French-sounding terms behind many of the Swedish Massage System’s basic movements.
In Sweden and most of Europe, there is no such term as ‘Swedish massage’. Rather, the practice is simply called ‘classic massage’, and is a much more prevalent treatment than what we refer to as ‘Swedish massage’. However, American spas deviate from this norm considerably. Here, ‘classic massage’ is relatively rare, whereas Swedish massage is considered the most basic massage method and can be found practically anywhere.
