Developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui, the practice of Reiki blends alternative and oriental medicine with spirituality. Its’ name literally translates to “universal life force energy”, and it utilizes a technique called “palm healing” – a series of localized touches, taps, and blowing – to manipulate meridian energy lines and chakras for the purpose of inducing healing. It is believed that this process, during which the practitioner fixes their gaze to the injured area while administering palm healing, is actually a method by which universal energy (or ‘reiki’) is transferred to the client to achieve a state of self-healing and balance.
