Origins of the term

Spa TherapyThe term ‘spa’ is actually a reference to a town in Belgium, which was known in the ancient Roman Empire as Aquae Spadanae. Back then, the word “Spadanae” was often misinterpreted as having connotations to the Latin word “spargere”, which literally translated to “scatter, sprinkle, or moisten”. This is an important piece of information to consider, as many illnesses in historic times were treated by medicinal bathing or drinking mineral-rich spring water.

Considering the lack of scientific treatments for disease at the time, natural springs were one of the most popular sources of medicinal healing. Coincidentally, the very same town of Aquae Spadanae (by then, simply known as “Spa”) became famous in the 17th century after a medicinal spring was discovered there. A health resort was quickly established in Spa, which became so frequented by the sick and ailing that the term “spa” soon grew to encompass any health resort in close proximity to a natural spring.
