The Roots of Aromatherapy

Old bottlesThe practice of aromatherapy originates further back than 3,500 B.C., to the first recorded accounts of scent being used for recreational purposes. When aromatics were first invented, they served a mainly cultural and religious role, and were usually practiced during religious or medicinal rites. The earliest instance of this takes place in ancient Egypt, where citizens would burn incense crafted from special woods, herbs, and spices as part of their worship rituals.

The evolution of aromatics as a science also took place in ancient Egypt, where certain herbs, spices, and other natural ingredients were found to be useful for embalming. In addition, many aromatic plants were soon integrated into Egyptians’ daily lifestyle, combined with everything from perfumes to cooking ingredients to luxury items. The knowledge of aromatics, having become commonplace by that time, quickly spread throughout the Eurasian continent via trade routes and cultural intermingling.

It was in the twentieth century that aromatherapy was finally reformed into a therapeutic treatment. This actually came about by its’ use as a natural homeopathic remedy, whereby it was discovered that natural oils soothed skin inflammation and, in some cases, even possessed antiseptic properties.
